The time has come

Babies

Time… oh, the time! It flies by. These colorful bluebonnet photos were taken back in April for my Little Lady’s first birthday. I blinked and I may have taken a few much needed deep breaths. Now she is in ‘school’ and it is finally TIME for Momma to get back to WORK!! Just in TIME to schedule your fall photo sessions! What a magical word…lol. Is there every really a good time for that jazz??

If anyone understands just how busy life gets, it’s yours truly. After all, Scotty’s one year photos were spontaneously taken in a field, on the side of the road headed to spend a long weekend in Austin! It’s a bit embarrassed to admit, other than her cake smash photos and sewing the outfit she wore, there wasn’t much planning involved with her one year photo session. But again, time! Surviving your first year as a parent, you quickly learn to prioritize life and any remaining energy you may have. Thank goodness, everything worked out just perfectly. I could obsess over her chubba thighs and all her many little expressions! With Dad’s help and a minor detour, we were able to capture some beautiful images of our baby girls. These two have a funny little ‘I want to cuddle you – don’t touch me’ relationship. Haha, but of course we had to include her fur sister, Reis also!

Time is an incredibly precious commodity. The good news is, scheduling a photo session with Savvy Images is pretty darn easy! We value quality over quantity to make sure you get the most from your experience. In my eyes, five amazing clients is SO much better than having two dozen mediocre clients. Savvy Images doesn’t do mediocre, and if you look back on past photo blogs, you’ll quickly see why our incredible clients deserve special treatment. They truly are the best and for that I am VERY grateful. What Savvy Images does DO, is everything we can to make sure your session is as seamless and unique to you as possible! Are you ready to become a Savvy Client and start customizing your perfect photo session? Or do you need to hear a little more?? And because THIS is real life, I couldn’t resist adding a little black & white insight into just how some photo sessions go. Saucy attitudes, eyes every direction, and super fun melt downs always keep me on my toes! Haha. Thank goodness, with a little teamwork, we always manage to capture great images regardless! Being prepared is half the battle and I provide you with LOTS of information to get you ready for your photo session.

    A Homemade Cake Smash

    Babies

Not long ago, we hit the BIG one year milestone and (of course) we celebrated by doing a super cute CAKE SMASH session! These sessions are rarely what Mom’s expect them to be. You never really know how your Little is going to react to the yummy, yet messiness of cake! Most babes are quiet shy tearing into their cakes and usually need a little help doing so from mom or dad. Every once in a while I come across one who tears into it with no shame! Scotty was somewhere in-between. At first she was way more interested in picking off and playing with the blue berries. With Dad’s guidance, she took a few bites, but decided she’d rather play the drums on her cake for a while. Haha. She shared a bit of her mess with her fur-sister, Reis (we allowed her to for a hot second). She checked out the flower cake topper, took a few more bites, then was over it. Knowing these sessions rarely happen as you’d like them to, I had zero expectations, and was very pleased by the curiosity and cuteness we captured.

I didn’t want her to have boatloads of sugar and get a tummy ache, so I decided to experiment with a little baking! When I say ‘experiment’, I am way serious. I don’t bake. Ever. My husband actually tried to talk me out of it. BUT (insert very proud Momma vibes here), I did, and we were ALL pleasantly surprised by the outcome! After scouring the internet, getting input from friends who had done the same, and consulting with my mother-in-law (who bakes often), I decided to try Fit Momma Real Food‘s No Sugar Banana Cake. You can find her recipe >>here<<. I really wanted a coral cake, so I used beet and orange peel juice to dye the cream cheese icing and whalaaa!! We had ourselves a sugar free, corn free, coral cake smash cake! Dad and I loved it so much, that we had no problem finishing up what she didn't finish! We even used the same cake for her actual first birthday party. I debated making cup cakes for her party guests, but quickly realized how many other party related items I still had to conquer by the weekend. Maybe next year!? If you're looking for a yummy, yet healthy alternative for your Babe's cake smash session, I highly recommend checking Fit Momma's recipe out. If I can make a success story out of my experiment, I'm confident anyone can! ;-) Savvy Images Cake SmashSavvy Images Cake Smash One Year Baby Photos - Houston PhotographerSavvy Images Cake Smash One Year Baby Photos - Houston PhotographerSavvy Images Cake Smash One Year Baby Photos - Houston Photographer

      When Emery was ONE

      Babies

Earlier this week baby Karson was featured on the Savvy Images blog, soooo I couldn’t resist showing off his big sister Emery’s one year photo session also! Even though her photos were taken WAY back in July of 2013, and she’s all big and grown up now. Just like her photos, Emery is FULL of fun and crammed packed with a BIG sassy little personality! Don’t let her beautiful baby blues fool you, she tore into her cute little birthday cake like nobody’s business. Out of all of my cake smash babies, I would venture to say that she conquered her cake like a champ (the key detail being > ALL on her own). Normally babies are a bit unsure of what to do and need a bit of guidance, but not this little beauty! First time eating cake… “I’ve got this Mom!” One year photo sessions are always so much fun. It’s like a mini explosion of a little personality. I absolutely love Working with families to customize a session based completely on their little Loves unique personality! I know mom will get a kick out of looking back at these photos several years later. It’s truly mind boggling how quickly babes turn into little kiddos right before your eyes!Savvy Images - Houston One Year Baby PhotosSavvy Images - Houston One Year Baby PhotosSavvy Images - Houston One Year Baby Photos

        Baby Karson is ONE

        Babies, Families

How blessed is this precious family to be celebrating an entire year filled with Baby Karson cuteness!? His little heartbreaker eyes and pout are beyond adorable! And I can’t even handle just how much his big sister loves him. Seriously. Heart. Melting. Mom was inspired to have his one year photo session, a la natural, out in the great outdoors. When I discovered all the many cool features at the location she had in mind, I got giddy excited about taking their photos there. WG Jones State Forest worked out fantastic and a fun fact related to its name, is that Karson’s grandpa is the incredibly talented and late George Jones! Double meaning and even more variety, makes it a win for all!! I had to capture the crane by the lake and the ducks bathing themselves, right before we got started. The huge logs and little stumps made for perfect photo props, and all the many little pine cones were the perfect accent! Towards the end of his session, little Karson had enough. He was tired and cold and over it. Seeing his big sister comfort him was something I will never forget. So much love! I’m so glad I had the opportunity to capture all the cuteness for mom and dad to look back on in many years. Those two, they make beautiful babies! But lets be real. I am the one who is really blessed here. This was my second time working with this fun family. Loyal clients are my absolute favorite! Stay tuned to see photos from Karson’s big sisters one year photo session a few years ago on the blog later this week.

Pretty in Pink • Newborn Photos

        Newborns

At twelve days old, this little missy was OH so pretty in pink. Because she was awake, we started her newborn photo session out by taking sweet photos with her mom. She was SO alert. She had very recently learned that she could stretch her skinny little legs and arms out, and she definitely loved doing so! I can’t deny that at that point, she made me a little nervous. There is a pretty slim window in a newbie’s fresh little life to capture (what I consider to be) true, cute little posed, ‘newborn photos’. At two weeks old, she was quickly nearing the end of that window. Next we captured some major cuteness of her cuddled up in a Seal skin hat that her grandmother hand made especially for her dad, to keep him warm during the harsh Alaska winters. Of course mom had the fireplace going so it was nice and cozy for her session, and that was incredibly helpful. With a little patience and persistence, she finally conked out for all of her ‘posed’ individual photos. And ohhhh myyyy, they ended up being SO precious. What a precious little lady! Her mom ordering a huge canvas of her with the pink wrap gently draped over her, and I believe that I just may have to get one to display in the studio also. Pretty in pink, in deed. Introducing a Fall Bundle of Joy • Alaska Newborn Photos

        Newborns

This handsome bundle of joy was born smack dab in the middle of fall here in Alaska. His name is Micah Julyan, and his momma wanted the timing of his birth to be captured in his newborn photos. SO that’s exactly what we did. Because we did his session as fall turned to winter, it was too cold to take this cute little man outside. So we improvised and brought some fun fall outdoor details into the Savvy Images studio! She gathered leaves from around their neighborhood and a few other festive fall items, and I absolutely love how it turned out. They clearly have much more colorful trees near where they live, because the ones I gathered were only a dull tone of orange and brown…lol. In his family photos, he looks JUST like a tiny little MAN!! I cannot even HANDLE the cuteness of his big one eye grin! This happy little one was checking on exactly what we were up to. Micah loved being bundled up and snuggling into his bunny “Rags” (which is also his grandpa Julyan’s nickname). We finished his session with some cute bare booty shots, and his skinny little roles were beyond precious! By the time they came back to review their photos a couple weeks later, he had already grown SO much. I absolutely LOVE seeing how much my cute little Savvy Newbies grow and change over time. Just think how much will have changed when mom and dad look back on his tiny toes in these photos ten years from now! Anchorage Newborn Photographer - Bundle of Joy - Anchorage Newborn Photos

          Timing for Perfect Newborn Photos

          Newborns

Anchorage Newborn Photos - Tips and Timing - Savvy ImagesBack in March I posted a blog on “Tips and Timing for Perfect Maternity Photos“, and this blog about newborn photos is WELL over due! If you are expecting, and would like to have newborn photos taken, PLEASE take a moment to read this blog post. And even more so, please keep in mind that the timing of your photo session is extremely important. It breaks my heart when mothers contact me well after their little one’s birth, specifically wanting cute/bendy/posed newborn photos. I can take beautiful lifestyle photos of you and your baby regardless of the timing, but in order to take THOSE types of “posed” photos, they should be taken WITHIN two weeks of birth. This is not a hard and fast rule, as each birth and baby is very unique, but knowing this information give you the power to plan accordingly as you wish. It can certainly be done later, but it just may potentially be a little more challenging for us. I certainly have the patience to do everything I can in my power to make it happen! Many of my little Savvy Newbies sessions have taken place well after two weeks, and I’ve never been disappointed with a single one of them. Some of them were born really early, so we waited until they were good and healthy for their “modeling debut”. The other newbies parents just didn’t realize the timing of newborn photos was so crucial. Luckily their mom’s wanted photos regardless, so we proceeded accordingly, and captured some MAJOR cuteness. What normal person WOULD just happen know that random information!? They TYPE of newborn photos you wish to capture will largely determine the best timing, and THAT is the purpose of this handy blog post. ;-) I want to make sure you can make an informed decision that sets us up to capture stunning images!Anchorage Newborn Photos - Tips and Timing - Savvy ImagesWhen brand new babies are just getting to know the world around them, it’s amazing what changes a SINGLE day can bring. Each day baby grows, becomes more alert, and learns they can stretchhhh those little arms and legs out on their own free will. Once that happens, keeping them cozy in those little “bendy” poses can be a tad bit challenging. I personally prefer to photograph newborn girls around 5 to 7 days old, and the timing of the little boys may vary by a few days later. Their timing greatly depends on if/when they are circumcised. A minor detail that we definitely want to take that into consideration! Taking their photos then really allows us to capture all their brand NEW little details. It also gives their complexion a little time to even out, and allows for Little Bit to get used to mom’s milk. A happy settled tummy does help set us up for success also!

Speaking of success, I provide you with LOTS of great information on what you can do to help make sure your session goes well. In addition to more information on timing, there will also be info on what to wear, what to bring, how to prepare, and even great tips on nursing. That seems to be helpful for all my first time mommas! Once you pay your Newborn Session retainer fee, your due date is officially penciled in on our calendar. Then when your baby finally arrives, you (OR preferably dad) can contact me to get your actual session day/time scheduled. As an official “Savvy Newbie”, you get priority on our schedule. Contact us as soon as possible, and we’ll get that worked out perfectly! We realize the world as you know it may be filled with crazy chaos at this time with all the new changes taking place, but we will do everything we can to make your session as quick and painless as possible. ;-) AND of course we’ll make sure that you have lots of gorgeous newborn photos to cherish for years to come!Anchorage Newborn Photos - Tips and Timing - Savvy Images

Introducing Owen Michael • Anchorage Newborn Photos

            Newborns

Owen is the newest Savvy Newbie in Anchorage, and I’m VERY excited to show him off. He and all of his cuteness are on the cover of the August issue of First Time Parent Magazine! FTP Magazine is a fairly new digital magazine that offers tips and tricks that will help first time parents maximize the enjoyment and development of their precious little ones. I can only imagine how helpful a handy electronic magazine like that would be, after bringing home a brand new baby for the first time. And it just so happens, that is just what Owen’s parents are… first time parents here in Anchorage! Savvy Images Newborn Photo Magazine Cover - Anchorage Newborn Photos

They get to learn ALL about those fun and exciting new world changing baby happenings. I have no doubt that the two of them are already pros by now. At exactly one week and one day old, he was a very serious, but extremely handsome little guy! It worked out great that he was the perfect little model for a smart and snazzy new magazine cover. His mom and I absolutely love just how smart he already looks. ;-) This baby boy has to have a bright future ahead of him!
Savvy Images - Anchorage Newborn Photographer

At home his nursery is decorated with a cute nautical theme, so the little sailor hat was an absolute must for his session. He pressed his little feet together all on his own, and they were just precious to photograph. And his priceless little POUT is beyond words! I cannot WAIT to get in the ginormous black and white canvas that his parents ordered from his session!

            A Colorful Cake Smash

            Babies

According to his mom, this cute little ham woke up from his nap with his grumpy-pants on, the day we did his colorful cake smash session. We know…being a one year old is tough stuff, but someone has to do it! He really made us work for the precious photos, it was absolutely worth it. We were able to capture his long little eyelashes, baby blue eyes, two munchkin teeth, and even his cute little chubster rolls! Between the cake and lots of silliness (thanks to mom and dad), we were able to pry some precious smiles out of him. It actually worked out perfectly, because all his dramatic little personalities came out in a matter of no time. The emotional progression in his photos is the best!! Curious, mesmerized, thrilled, content, over it, then finally PISSED. All the while, capturing his cute little details and expressions! He was a baby on a mission… after sampling the cake, he went for the candle, and after he’d had enough, he knocked the whole cake over. Such a dramatic little mister. He showed us! ;-) “Mom.. Dad.. No more of this cake smash madness. Puleaseee.” After seeing his big little crocodile tears, we decided it was time to clean up! Mom came to the rescue, and all was good with the world. These photos will be the perfect addition to the decor at his graduation party several years down the road. Savvy Images - Anchorage Photographer - One Year Cake Smash Photos

            Alaska Vacation Photos!!

            Families, Travel

Are you visiting Anchorage in the near future? And would you love beautiful vacation photos while in Alaska!? That’s what happened with these lovely ladies, and how that ended up happening is a pretty cool story! This past February when I went to Vegas for WPPI (a HUGE annual photography convention), I sat next to Allison in one of the morning classes. It was bright and early after being in Vegas for a couple days, and as perky as ever, she immediately said hello and we started chatting! Allison is a wedding photographer in Dallas, and I was so excited to meet another Texan photographer. After the standard “networking” introduction, we got to talking, and quickly figured out that we had something (besides photography and being from Texas) in common… Anchorage, ALASKA. Every year, Allison and her mother go on a big vacation together. How random and fun is that!? But that’s not it… by the end of the week in Vegas, we also realized that Allison’s sister-in-law is actually one of my old girl friends from college! This is such a crazy, random, and small world that we live in! SO this summer she and her mom came to Anchorage for a few days before exploring more of Alaska by car, ATV, plane, train, boat, raft, kayak, AND cruise ship. THAT is an adventurous vacation!! As a photographer who often vacations, I absolutely understand the value of getting a really GOOD vacation photo. You could ask the random passing stranger, and hope they get you in focus and actually capture the scenery of whatever cool place your visiting. Or there is the infamous self timer photo, which may or may not be straight, composed well, or (again) in focus. And now there is even a “selfie pole” that you can use to TRY and capture everything! However possible, if you take enough, surely one of your vacation photos may come out great. But when you’re trying to enjoy a once in a lifetime vacation, do you really want to cross your fingers and HOPE for a few good photos?! If we get more than ONE really good “framer” while on vacation, I’d say that’s a success…lol. So you can imagine that I was BEYOND ecstatic when I realized that Allison was dead set on scheduling an actual photo session in Anchorage with Savvy Images as soon as she got to Alaska! We had a little lunch with a view, we took a long drive south, we explored several areas along my favorite Alaskan coastal drive (The Seward Highway), we had a little dinner, then finished up with a gorgeous portrait session at Beluga Point. Allison even got to put her toes in the ocean! It was one heck of a day to kick off their Alaskan Adventure. I’m SO glad that I had the opportunity to make sure they started their trip out with LOTS of great vacation photos! Taking photos for another photographer is pretty darn cool, because they understand all the fun things that need to be considered for a great photo session. Though the wind was a bit crazy (as it tends to be in Alaska), we captured some beautiful images of the two of them. I had to share a handful of them below. Seriously, it’s amazing to me that they get to make so many great memories together! What a duo… They’re fun, they’re gorgeous, and they were a blast to photograph. Even though they’d strongly disagree, they really do know how to work the wind AND the camera! Savvy Images - Anchorage Photographer - Alaska Vacation Photos

These cute twins have EXCITING news!

            Babies, Families

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing these cute twins when they were in their momma’s belly a little over two years ago back in Austin, and again for their newborn photo session shortly after that. And I’m BEYOND grateful that I am able to occasionally travel back to Texas to continue photographing old & faithful clients, because I had the opportunity to photo their cute little family AGAIN in The Woodlands last month for their second birthdays! Their photo session followed a nice Texas downpour, and was appropriately filled with lots of chaos. We took some traditional family photos, some cute two year milestone photos, and even finished up with a super cute Micky & Minnie Mouse themed cake smash! They were not a fan of walking on the wet ground, but quickly changed their focus to the important stuff…CAKE. They were so sweet to even feed each other! They didn’t get too messy, but just in case, both sets of grandparents were there on hand to help out. What THEY didn’t know, was that they were actually there to get some REALLY exciting news from Dylan and Drake! You can tell from the photos below, that the twins are clearly not excited about the big news! >>insert temper tantrum here<< LOL, their surprised grandparents certainly were, and I have no doubt the twins warm up to the idea eventually. Mom was a tad bit frustrated that they didn’t cooperate and sharing the exciting news as she had planned (just as I would have been also), but it’s clear that everything worked out great!! Their change of plans included MAJOR cuteness!! They definitely did a great job communicated the news AND exactly how they felt about having to share mom and dad’s attention with a new little addition soon. ;-P I can’t wait to photograph them again once their growing family becomes a cute fam of FIVE. Can you imagine how funny it will be to pull out their beautiful session album to show these photos to them in twenty years!? Absolutely.Pricesless.Perfection. Miss Alaska America Pageant

            Events

In January, I had the honor of photographing the Miss Alaska America Junior High, High School, and Collegiate Pageant here in Anchorage. It’s definitely something a little different from my cute bellies, and little newborn booties, but I embraced the opportunity! I think it’s great to challenge yourself with something different every once in a while, so you don’t grow the least bit complacent. It keeps you on your toes! Not only did I meet lots of amazing new people by doing so, but I learned quiet a few new things (mostly about pageant life). ;-) Seeing the girls strut their thing up on that stage was so much fun! Let me tell you all about some SASS!! lol. This pageant has been hosted by Rita Corwin for YEARS, but this year she passed her duties over to Sarah Smith. After intermission, the team even put an emotional slide show together for her of photos taken while Director. Rita and Sarah (with lots of great help) put on a fantastic show that even included dancers from Studio 49, AND a DJ during the runway portion of the show. It was very up beat and entertaining. Last year’s Queens had the opportunity to say goodbye, and then the new Queens were announced! Definitely suspenseful stuff. I’ve waited until now to post this blog, because these beautiful Queens are heading to Florida today for Miss America NATIONALS. The pageant will take place on July 5th and 6th, and you can even watch it live at www.pageantvision.com. Please keep the three lovely ladies below in your thoughts as they represent Alaska!!Miss Alaska America - Savvy Images - Anchorage Photographer
