Fun, vivid and unique Pet photos taken by Savvy Images.
We said goodbye to our sweet fur grandma Reis. After almost sixteen years, it’s our first National Pet Day without our feisty little fur Lover. I knew it would hurt losing her, but I didn’t realize it would physically hurt. After all we have been through, the day we said goodbye to her a month ago, was my lowest point of all. But the good news, is that she is no longer suffering and I’m convinced that it will only look up from here.
She was my side kick wherever I went. From our bike rides along Lakefront Trail in Chicago. To making loops around White Rock Lake in Dallas. Exploring all around Austin and Texas. To glaciers and fishing on the Kenai River in Alaska. To Big Sur and walks along the beach in Half Moon Bay. And finally to Texas, with countless vacation adventures in between. This fur child traveled like a pro and loved every moment being by her momma’s side.
For weeks, I racked my brain as to how I could honor and celebrate her spunky little life. When I get sad, overwhelmed, bored (anything really), I look back on photos to cheer myself up or pass the time. After our sad goodbye, I looked back over the countless photos I have of her and it came to me last week… everyone should have beautiful photos of their fur children. People usually have professional photos taken of themselves and their children, but why not hang beautiful artwork of their fur babes on the walls also?!
Reis was always my test model. Anytime I got a new phone, camera, lens or sometimes even photography props, she was my gal. She alway worked her way into any photo she could (just check out her sisters newborn session here). Even though there is a huge hole in my heart, it makes me happy looking back on all her photos. I have dreaded writing this blog, but I want to make sure other people have the same when their pet’s time comes. It makes perfect sense to relaunching my company here in Austin doing photo sessions in her name.
This morning I had the pleasure of photographing one of my past clients new spunky fur Lover in my brand new outdoor studio. Can we just focus on how PRECIOUS her sweet Emmy is!? Talk about puppy eyes! She had so much energy, loves all the treats, and did awesome for her first modeling session. ;-)
Other animals are most certainly welcome also. Whatever it is that may fill the space in your heart, I would love to photograph your pet. If you are interested in signing your pet up for one of Savvy Images’ limited Fine Art mini sessions, please contact me right away.
Anyone that has followed my work for any amount of time, knows that if you have a furbaby, they are absolutely considered family here at Savvy Images! I not only allow your furry loves to participate in your family photo session, I ENCOURAGE it. Our pets bring so much joy and are such a huge part of our lives, I couldn’t imagine NOT including them. Every now and then, they can be a bit challenging to photograph, but I’m always up for the challenge, and the outcome is ALWAYS incredibly rewarding! Heck, sometimes they’re a breeze. Especially if you have a few little treats handy. This beautiful family won their photo session at a Houston Pets Alive Charity Auction this past fall. When I relocate to a new city, there are a few charities that I always look into. Ironically, I happened to stumble upon a great PetsAlive contact shortly after moving back to Texas, and I couldn’t help but donate a Pet Family Photo Session right away. While my contribution may not be incredibly significant in the grand scheme of things, I’m a firm believer that every little bit helps. It makes me extremely happy to do what I love (photograph fun families), while similtaneously being able to give back to the community (specifically, cute furry friends in need)! ;-) Their big baby, Penn was a bit shy in front of the camera, but ended up doing great for us. Thanks to Houston Pets Alive, I’m grateful to have new clients in Houston that consider their FurBaby family also!
This family photo session was supposed to be the last I did in Alaska before moving back to Texas. Given each of the drastically different perceptions about Alaska and Texas (igloos and penguins vs tractors and horses), I thought that this was the perfect send off session. Horses in Alaska!! If you read my last blog about the BIG surprise following our maternity photo session, then you know it didn’t exactly work out that way. And that’s okay. Everything worked out just as is should. Then, and for their session also. We were down to the wire scheduling their family photo session, and it happened to be the coldest day of Anchorage’s mild Alaskan winter. ;-) Thank goodness they had a rustic barn for us to utilize for their session! Don’t get me wrong, it was still really cold, as the barn isn’t heated and it was NEGATIVE two degrees outside. You may be able to see the little miss below rocking some hand warmers in the photos, and that was just fine with all of us. She was able to warm her fingers to make the session a little more bearable, and it’s a sneaky little reminder of just how flippin’ cold it was that day. Those and her cute, red little nose! After all, it is Alaska. In their charming Alaskan barn, they had several beautiful horses trying to stay warm, so we just had to include one in their photos. With all the furbabies you may have seen in my photos, I’m sure you can tell that I’m a huge fan of including family pets in your photo session! Even if they have hooves instead of paws. But of course we had to include the newest fur baby additions also. Major cuteness overload with three pretty ladies, a stunning horse and all those cuddly puppies! I’m so excited to finally share their beautiful photos with all of you.
A little over six weeks ago, Sonja Stafford of Dolce Vita Photo Boutique did our maternity session and took some beautiful photos of my growing family (and growing belly…haha). Little did we know that the night after that session, our feisty little lady would start trying to make her way into this world. Let’s talk about some crazy timing!! She made that happen super early on the morning of March 29th, and our plans to move to Texas the following week quickly changed! There will be much more about her in a future blog post including her much anticipated newborn photos, but now, I want to focus on our maternity session with Sonja. We did our maternity session a bit earlier than I normally would have, due to the timing of our move down to Texas. Because our baby girl was “Made in Alaska”, it was important to me that our maternity photos were done here also. With all of the major moving chaos, each of our crazy schedules and the wonky Alaskan weather, I am SO glad that we were able to schedule them when we did. It was also really important to me to work with a photographer that I could connect well with on this session, as I hoped to have a great recommendation for all my past clients. In my opinion, being able to connect well with your photographer is a HUGE factor to the success of your photo session. You want to make sure they bring out the best in you, and make you feel as comfortable as possible in front of the camera (especially for me spending most my time behind the lens). Let’s just say that from the beginning is was clear that we would connect incredibly well. I wish we had started hanging out together much sooner! Though our photography styles are a bit different, I feel like we see photography in the same light, and aspire to offer the same experience to each of our clients. It’s special to share a passion like that with someone! Sonja was wonderful about brain storming session ideas and locations. We even met up a few times to hang and check out possible locations. My husband and I really wanted to capture as much of the incredible beauty of Alaska in our maternity session. I’m very pleased that even though the wind was INSANELY STRONG everywhere we went, Sonja was able to make that happen for us. AND, she even made me feel fabulous all through out the session. Any expecting woman knows THAT is extremely important when you’re carrying extra weight around the middle! ;-) We included our first (fur) baby in the session, worked with the wind as best we could, and made our way towards/down our favorite road in all of Alaska. Sonja even managed to wrap up our session by capturing a few photos of us standing smack dab in the middle of the Seward Highway! SO for all my many amazing clients that are looking for someone new to capture beautiful moments, be sure to contact Sonja with Dolce Vita Photo Boutique. She just opened up a large, yet charming studio space in the historic arts district of downtown Anchorage last week, and I’m excited to see her do great things in the near future. I like to think that I have pretty high standards for the entire photography experience, and it’s great to be able to recommend her with confidence!
I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to photograph this cute family and their fur child twice now, and I’m even more blessed to call them friends! You may remember this sassy pup and her sister from their bittersweet photo session, and their awesome dad from his real estate portrait session last year. Also, if you didn’t make the connection, he is the incredibly talented person that took our super cute pregnancy announcement photos not too long ago. ;-) I can’t tell you how much we are going to miss them when we move back to Texas!! It’s so nice to have reliable friends that both my husband and I get along so well with. We all went to dinner last week, and the time flewwww by because we were all having such a good time chatting it up. It was really nice that they also loved to get out and embrace Alaska when possible. I just wish we could have coordinated our chaotic schedules to all adventure around Alaska more together while we were here! I must say that it’s a huge bonus to hang out with people that inspire you to be better at what you love. This photo session was by far my coldest to date here in Alaska! Thank goodness even Miss Apun was a trooper, for the most part. She let us know when she’d had enough. Haha. We toughed thru the harsh conditions and I’m SO glad that we were able to capture lots of cute family snow photos. Having all those for them to proudly display in their home for years to come was definitely worth the chill. ;-)
Back in March, after we completed Mrs. Alaska’s outdoor Queen session, she let me know that she would be contacting me later in the year. April was dead set on taking fall photos with her family, which including two active fur babies! She said that she got even more excited about her fall family session after getting so many compliments on her previous session’s photos at Mrs. America Nationals. Clearly, that’s the best news ever for me! As expected, she contacted me as fall crept up on us. I’m SO glad that she did, and of course I did everything I could to make that happen for her. In fact, to make SURE that it happened well, we actually did TWO sessions. Now that was a first for me! Let me explain… The first time we met, was at a cute estuary center near the Savvy Images Studio. It was on the very tail end of the long rain, and the forecast still looked a bit questionable. Fall comes and goes with a quickness each year in Alaska, so we wanted to be sure we didn’t miss our small window of opportunity. Gorgeous Autumn colors were randomly scattered across Anchorage, but were not completely at their prime yet. We had a few things going against us already, and then we arrived to quickly discovered a HUGE moose. And he just happened to be hanging out RIGHT in the area that I had anticipated taking photos of them. We proceeded and improvised last minute, keeping an eye out for that big fella. BUT then shortly after that, it started sprinkling on us! It didn’t pour, but after everything else, it didn’t take long to call the shoot. It just wasn’t meant to happen for us that day! I always strive to deliver high quality images to exceed my clients expectations. The first session’s photos were great of HER, but by the time we got to the family photos, the wheels almost fell off our bus! We’re both really glad that we were able to get together again after that, because our second session was quick, magical and perfectly fall. I am really excited to have her display THESE snazzy family photos in their home for years to come! Their gallery wrapped canvas will be gorgeous!! Aren’t they such a beautiful little family?!
This fun session included two beautiful young ladies, two awesome parents, AND two silly pups! What else could you need for a perfect family photo session, besides lots of gorgeous fall colors?! That is exactly why their mom wanted to capture their family together right in their back yard surrounded by colorful Alaskan fall foliage. Because it rained SO much this year, it was a bit tricky getting their session scheduled. Time passed, more rain fell, and ultimately the rain subsided. We finally had a few days of great weather to take lots of beautiful photos of this beautiful family. I just love that the girls wore beautiful dresses with their Xtra Tuf Boots. Just an extra little touch of Alaskan in their sassy photos! ;-) AS IF their session was already perfection, mid way thru the girls had a super fun inpromtu leave toss. And THEN we finished up with some cute photos of them in their tree house! I can’t say it enough… how COOL are my clients!? Their entire family was so much fun to photograph, and I cannot wait to design their session album tomorrow. I’m SO glad they’ll have that to look back on once the girls are all grown and mom & dad have the house to themselves!
I have been excited about posting this yummy engagement session since before the session even took place when I was back in Texas not too long ago! This is my sister-in-law, her groom-to-be, and their fur baby Raad. How cute is their little family!? I just love that they included Raad in their engagement photos, but let’s be real…that was to be expected. After all, HE was the one who asked her to marry he and his dad (on a note that was tied to his collar). ;-) Raad is even going to be in the wedding. Just as he should be! I’m so eager to see the three of them get married in November!! As odd as it may seem to some, I refer to their session as yummy for two reasons: 1.) Because the sun light and weather were just about perfection to take beautiful photos. Even for Texas standards! It’s the little things, and another great reason to get even more excited about their session. 2.) Because anyone knows these two, KNOWS they they know a thing or two about really good food. They just happen to be major foodies in Austin, and the Mr-to-be is even a chef at one of the most popular restaurants downtown! Anytime I need a great recommendation in Austin, they are the first people I contact. That leads me to another of the many reasons that I got so excited about their session… they chose to take the second half of their photos in front of the “Butter Half” mural in east Austin! There couldn’t possibly be a more perfect option for these two! We had so much fun during their session. You can tell from a few of the photos below that these two are super silly…lol. What I didn’t expect (or think about) was how great it would be to see how much they both really adored each other. It’s a great feeling to see your family happy in love! I had to include a few photos of her beautiful ring also! Butttt, unlike most couples the groom-to-be has an engagement ring also. A ‘MANgagement’ ring, as they called it. It’s their thing. Maybe it should be A thing…? Either way, I hope you enjoy looking at their photos at least half as much as I enjoyed taking them!
I have to warn you that this is such a sad but incredibly sweet story about a loving family’s pet, and their recent bittersweet goodbye. A fellow incredibly talented photography friend and I had plans to go shooting not too long ago, but we had to cancel them because his world was quickly turned upside down. One of his two furbabies slipped on the ice in their yard and broke her femur. When he and his wife took Luci (their 10 year old black and white Husky rescue puppy) to the vet, they unexpectedly discovered that their healthy little girl had cancer. Incredibly heartbreaking news. It was taking over her body, and weakening her bones. They were faced with one of the most difficult decisions that they’ve ever had to make. As any good parent would, they didn’t want to see their baby suffer. When he told me what happened, I offered to take photos of the four of them as a family right away. I wasn’t sure how he would feel about that, but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to offer. They had a couple days to say goodbye, and his wife decided that they wanted me to come and take photos of them. After ten years and MANY photos later, the four of them never had a photo taken together! They had planned on scheduling a portrait session in the spring, but time didn’t allow for that. If you happen to follow my blog or Instagram, you know how much I HATE cancer, and how much I LOVE Furbabies. I knew that it would be an incredibly hard session to photograph, but I thought it was incredibly important for them to have photos as a family. Their furbabies were beautiful, SO sweet and very curious about this new person in their home. After some sniffing, I was glad that they welcomed me with lots of kisses! We all held it together very well, but there was an unmentioned ache in everyone’s heart. Even Luci’s sister Apun knew something was going on. She was also a rescue puppy that joined their family very soon after Luci. As a puppy, she was snow white, so appropriately so, her name means ‘snow’ in Yupik. She was a sassy little gal, and she was being protective of her sister. She cracked us up with her cute little whiny noises! I can’t even explain how cute they were together. All four of them. Those furbabies were definitely loved, and it was VERY clear that they loved their mom and dad right back. We did the session in their living room so Luci was comfortable. I’m SO glad that we did, because we were able to take photos of them on THEIR favorite. Yes of course, a couch just for the girls! (I told you there were loved) Their neighbors call Luci and Apun the neighborhood watch dogs, because they sit up on the back of their couch and keep an eye on everything, out their big living room window. Seriously SO cute! It makes me smile thinking about the great stories they told about Luci, and knowing how much joy she brought to their hearts over the last ten years. I absolutely hate that they had to say goodbye to their baby girl, but I’m very honored to capture the last wonderful moments together.
I met this little lady’s mom when I photographed the Grand Opening of the Lululemon Showroom here in Anchorage a couple months ago. She and her boyfriend recently brought home this precious puppy pet, and of course that is an amazing reason to take professional photos! We finally found an opportunity to align our schedules, and I scouted a cool/stunning new location just south of Anchorage. I am very glad that Fall was in full swing, and I was able to capture all the gorgeous colors in their session. And SERIOUSLY, could Luna possibly be ANY cuter!? Just look at those big pretty puppy eyes of hers! She was SO cute and curious. For being so young, she did awesome during their pet photo session. I am very excited to share some of their beautiful photos. I’m not going to lie… There were SO many great ones, that I had a really hard time narrowing it down for this blog post! No complaints here, I love having that problem. I am very excited about our session success!! ;-)
This awesome family just happens to be friends with my little Edible Austin Magazine Cover Model back in Texas! They hadn’t had family photos taken in several years, and I’m glad mom decided that it was time for an update. I was thrilled when they asked if they could have other family members, including their pups join in on the session!! Then, once we decided to do their photo session at their favorite park in Anchorage, I just knew their session was going to be a really good one! The trails, creek and pond were just gorgeous. There even happened to be a perfect little stump that we were able to use also. What a good looking family!! It makes me so happy when things work out so well, and we able to capture lots of beautiful moments. =)
