Coastal Flowers

Maternity

Before I ever even realized living in California would be a reality for me, I always dreamt of coastal flowers. And more specifically, photographing a beautiful momma-to-be surround by thousands of colorful coastal flowers. This lovely lady contacted me shortly after we moved here, very early in her pregnancy. I was beyond thrilled she was being so proactive about her maternity session and knew she must really value having beautiful photos. She even had a very specific vision in mind for her maternity photos. Simple attire, stunning nursery and a cute lil bump. Easy.

Over the next several months, we randomly discussed details about her session. She would send me messages with photos she liked and I brainstormed ways to make her session unique. But little did I realize just how adorable her baby girl’s nursery was going to be!

I was thrilled to capture it in her photographs. There were so many precious details to document! We even managed to sneak dad in for several of the photos.I absolutely LOVE that you can see how much he adores her and her cute bump. She was even game for wearing one of my recent sewing creations! A crazy cute maternity body suit. It was my first time making something like this. Though it wasn’t perfect, I was very happy with how it turned out. And the color worked out perfectly to compliment the nursery!

But here’s where, my dreams came true……….

She is absolutely glowing! It may have been a stunning backdrop, but it was SO cold that evening. I’m so glad they were they were both such troopers. We all agreed it was definitely worth the drive and chilly breeze!Halfmoon Bay Maternity PhotosAnd then when I found out they got married on a beach, I knew this session was destined to be. They were the perfect couple for my coastal flower vision. I mean, there’s no other way to say it… this stunning momma KILLED IT.Halfmoon Bay Maternity Beach Photos

Motherhood

Families

Motherhood is the most challenging things I have ever done. I was forced to discover this minor detail way faster than expected when my first born made her way into this world ten weeks early. Exactly five days before our movers were scheduled to move us from Alaska to Texas. Our adventurous little Lady just had to be an Alaskan! Since the moment my water unexpectedly broke after an uneventful date night, I have been winging motherhood as best I can. Just like sooooo many awesome mommas out there. We do the best we can with the knowledge and resources we have at any given moment.

But what I have also learned, is if you pay attention, the universe gives you exactly what you can handle. In just the right time.

Savvy Images Motherhood 1

Knowing what I do now, I feel I experienced her birth the way I did to open my eyes. And more importantly, to teach me how to raise healthy children. I’ve been mostly successful so far, so I can say my traumatic experience wasn’t completely worthless.

Just like some shitty experiences happen for good reason, I’m confident that many of the people you come across in life serve a purpose. This beautiful mom and I bonded over an incredibly cute pair of Hannah Andersson slide on sandals during our daughter’s swim classes. Little did we know then, we would grow to share a valuable friendship. And ultimately, due to each of our current circumstances, our friendship would help both of us be better mothers!

After a few turbulent life experiences, I thought these beautiful ladies needed something a little “extra.” They were going to be the perfect models for a styled photo session I’ve had in mind.

Just like this momma, my current focus in life is to be the best mother possible. So, Savvy Images is taking a bit of a “professional pause.” Thru monthly styled photography sessions like this one, I will collaborate with awesome folks around me to create beautiful artwork.  Simultaneously, exploring new creative possibilities. Because I love a good challenge and (clearly) bit of chaos, I am attempting to CREATE some of the outfits my “models” wear during their sessions.

During different types of self development exploration, I thought myself how to sew!! Largely thanks to the help of YouTube and a few valuable Facebook sewing groups. You can see I have lots of time on my hands after putting our girls down in the evenings, while dad travels for work and school. Mom’s top is self drafted using many lucky guestimations, and I used a modified Stripped Swallow Designs pattern for her little Lady’s dress.

Savvy Images Motherhood 1

When planning this styled photo session, my vision was Mommy & Me Glam. Everything came together just as I had envisioned,  including mom’s hair and makeup. Keep an eye out for another blog post in the future, about working with the lovely Beauty by Sofia Bee! She’s an incredibly talented momma herself, who uses Non Toxic Beauty products on all her clients.

In the meantime, put all your awesome momma vibes out there, to connect and bless the other hard working mommas around you! We all have our unique challenges and life is a whole lot better when we conquer motherhood together!

Destined for the Bay

Families

The same morning that my husband and I decided to make the leap of faith to move to The Bay Area, I went to a playdate with two other Houston mommas. One of the moms was a fairly new friend and the other, I was just meeting for the first time. A bit frazzled and still in shock, I shared my news. There were some long winded “What in the world are we thinking?” comments, and then my new momma friend, mentioned, one day she hoped to make the same move with her family.

Destined for the Bay Area

It wasn’t long before we were taking a break house hunting at a cool park in San Francisco and I received a text message from her saying her husband just accepted a new job. They were going to be moving also! They actually ended up moving to the Bay Area before we did. It was great!! We had our first friends in California, before even moving here. So it only makes sense they would be the first family I photograph here in the Bay Area.

Her Little One’s are the same age as mine, so it couldn’t have been more perfect. We scheduled play dates right away, as soon as we got moved. Even before settling in to our new home! It was the best way to keep the sane for all involved. Anyone who has made a big move with small children, very likely know exactly what I’m talking about.

And it’s an added bonus that we automatically get fun parent friends out of the whole deal also. ;-)

Baby Brett and I had a great time, scouting locations. And of course, checking out the parks nearby. I was so excited to finally have the chance to capture some of the incredible beauty here in California during their family photo session!

Brand New

Newborns

After moving to San Francisco I started following and connecting with other seemingly likeminded Mommas over social media. Being brand new in town with two little ones and no family or friends around is hard. Especially, for someone who is normally extremely outgoing. I knew there just HAD to be other moms in a similar situation! There is so much to see and explore around San Francisco, and everyone knows life is way more fun with friends.

Fast forward several months… I saw that one of the fun mom’s I followed and randomly exchanged comments with on Instagram had just welcomed her brand new babe! Childcare for my Littles was finally established and we’d gotten into a great little groove.

This momma was beyond ready to get back to shooting!

I needed to test out my new posing set up, as well as create some beautiful new website content. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to do exactly that, so I reached out to her and within a few hours, we were all set to shoot! You guys… her sweet babe!!

Savvy Images - Brand new Baby in San Francisco

My posing set up turned out to be a total disappointment (and has since been redesigned), but this cute Babe was allllllll the cuteness possible. Just check out her perfect little nose!

This beautiful new Babe hit the jackpot, because not only does she have a fun Mom, she also has a super proud and loving Big Sister to snuggle with!

Savvy Images - Brand new Big Sister in San Francisco

Just as I hoped and expected, after this photo session and finally meeting in person, we’ve become brand new adventure friends! Our older Little Ladies were immediate besties, and we’ve explored several fun spots around San Francisco together. I look forward to more fun in the future and seeing these pretty Babes blossom into lovely young girls!

All about Love

Families, Kids, Personal

I have been thinking a lot about love. Loving those around you, loving who you are, loving what you stand for and loving what you do. A fellow creative entrepreneur recently posted on Instagram asking, “What are you willing to do for a whole year and never get paid?” This really struck a cord with me.

This. At this very moment in my life, this is what I would do.

Documenting beautiful moments like these is what I love doing.

I had originally planned to do another blog post today on Valentine’s Day, but my mind kept going back to these images. Timeless and simple, yet they radiate pure and boundless love. All that is important.

Shortly after relocating to Burlingame, I was contacted by a fellow mom about taking holiday photos for the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area. With so many unknowns up in the air, I was not able to commit do doing so at first. But as the universe would have it, I was ultimately able to. Even after many obstacles, I am so very glad it worked out. Donating my personal time to photograph these fun families was one of the highlights of  my holiday season. I smile every time I think about the incredible energy that took place during each of these mini sessions. I was so eager to share the photos with each family and now I’m so excited to finally share their contagious love with you!

Love and be loved. Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Life with an Au Pair

Personal

A little over a year ago I didn’t even really know what the word “Au Pair” meant. And the idea of having a stranger live in our home would have been a non-starter. But then a unique opportunity presented itself to our family. My husband was offered a new job within his company AND decided to pursue his Executive MBA degree from Wharton. Both in San Francisco. Both thousands of miles away from all our friends, family and any form of support system we had come to know with two small children. He could have turned down the job and just commuted back and forth to California for school every other weekend. But where’s the fun in that?! ;-) Deciding to move west was an incredibly difficult decision, knowing he would be a mostly absentee dad and husband for two (very LONG) years.

After being introduced to the concept by a mom friend in Houston, we further researched exactly what having an Au Pair meant. There are many common misconceptions about being a host family:

  • Au Pairs are not live in childcare for only high income families.
  • Having an Au Pair does not mean you have child care 24/7 around the clock.
  • Au Pairs are thoroughly screened and regulated by a licensed agency.
  • Au Pairs are trained and have previous childcare experience.
  • There is a very involved interview process when decided on an Au Pair.
  • Hosting an Au Pair is a cultural exchange program.
  • Most Au Pairs join the program and come to the USA to better their English.

Once we understood each of those in more detail, we realized it would be a great solution for our big move. After giving me a rough visual of what life would be like, my husband left the final decision up to me. What the hell… life is either a boring adventure, or nothing at all. What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. Insert all the cliche quotes possible here. We took a huge leap of faith and headed west to look for a new place to call home.

I was shocked to find out how common having an Au Pair is here in California. When we got settled, and went thru both the application and interview process, we finally welcomed our new Au Pair from Colombia! She was just as nervous as us, but we immediately had such a great connection. She’s fun, respectful, loving, stands her ground with our spirited three year old AND is spontaneously adventurous, just like us! Taking a year off from school, her goal was to improve her English and experience as much of the United States as possible.

I asked many questions when getting to know her from afar. One was if she liked the beach, the mountains, the desert, or wildflowers best. When she answered “wildflowers,” I knew she was going to fit right in great. I took the photo above at our favorite spot in Half Moon Bay and framed it above her bed. I also put many framed photos of her friends an family around her room. And because she shares a bathroom with the girls, I had to have beautiful photos of them together in this stunning rose garden near our home, to frame there. This was her first time to be far away from her family, so wanted her to feel at home, in her new home with us. The good news is, she loves beautiful photos just as much as I do!

If I am to be honest, she’s more of a side kick or stand in co-parent for me.

For our family, having an Au Pair does not mean someone else is raising our girls. It means we have added another beautiful young lady to adventurous girl gang over here. Though dad temporarily isn’t, I am very much still a part of the picture. Having her keeps me sane and allows me to pursue my passions. Though I mostly work from home, I always knew I didn’t want to be a stay-at-home-mom. Raising toddlers is not easy. I have NO IDEA how single moms or dads do it alone, so MAD PROPS to you guys on that. Our girls have consistent care, another strong female to look up to and are both learning Spanish. Because of her, we have all learned SO much about the Colombian culture. She is incredibly understanding of our continued chaos and it’s priceless to have her around when my husband travels for work often.

Being a part of this program has been such a great experience for our family, so far. If you have any questions or are looking into the possibility of hosting an Au Pair, please feel free to reach out!

Milk Bath Bonus

Maternity, Personal

Never in my life would I have thought I would do a Milk Bath Photo Session. But when your talented photographer comes to you with a cool idea, you certainly don’t protest! I also never thought I would show photos like this of myself publicly, but holy hell…

Parenting 101, I have learned never to say never. ;-)

And more important, Pregnancy is hard.

Having a high risk pregnancy, given my limited upright time, laying down in the tub for this session wasn’t a problem at all.  These photos are like a badge of honor. My cleavage may be more than overwhelming, but I’m damn proud that my body worked so hard to successfully create a perfect little human.

Here they are… Baby Brett’s bump, in all her glory!

Milk bath maternity sessions may be a fad, anddd it was a bit strange to lay in a tub of milk, but I’m certainly glad we did it. It’s fun to push creative boundaries!

A Sweet Maternity Experience…

Maternity, Personal

Many, many moons have passed, but I had share our beautiful images and maternity photo experience with Sweet Pecks Photography. If you know me personally or read my previous blog post, you already know my second pregnancy wasn’t a walk in the park. But lets be real, is it really for anyone?! Even if things go perfectly as planned, it’s still a pretty high stress time in one’s life. Worrying about having a great photo session experience should not be on your already LONG list of things to accomplish within such a short window of time.

I cannot stress this enough… Having a good connection with your maternity photographer is SO VERY important.

Of course, make sure you love their style and technique first. You should know they are clearly capable of taking beautiful photos. But taking lovely photos of the side of a barn is easy. LOL You may beam with stunning rays of golden sunshine, but “large and in charge” is how you will likely feel eight months in. Speaking from experience, you want to work with someone who makes you look AND feel your absolute best in front of their camera.

In the midst of a pretty unpleasant pregnancy, my experience with Shary at Sweet Pecks was a HUGE highlight. Knowing my situation, she went out of her way to make sure I had an amazing session. From scheduling, then planning, to execution… the entire process was zero stress. Even though a bit of a stretch for my circumstances, she brought my vision of a beach maternity photo session to life. And knowing my “upright” time was limited, she even drove to make it happen! Did I mention, she even provided the dresses I wore?!

That’s grand, but truly connecting with the person behind the camera is equally important.

You’ll want to trust they will capture your best angles and expressions. Standing stiff in front of a beautiful backdrop, with the perfect light, is not the way to go. It’s awkward. You’re growing a human. This is a pretty big time in your life. The goal should be to document real, genuine emotion. Giving a bit of direction here and there, when needed. You really want a photographer who engages with, encourages you, and embraces the moment your husband and toddler surprise you to join in on the session shortly after it begins. ;-)

Here are a few more tips on how to set yourself up for a successful maternity photo session:

  • Don’t be afraid to over communicate and ask a million questions to make sure your creative visions and plans align. I would even recommend getting on the phone a few times, especially when planning.
  • Be sure to understand how your photographer does things. From scheduling to the delivery of your final product, you should know exactly what to expect, and when to expect it will happen. If not, ask more questions.
  • Invest your time and energy into working with a maternity photographer who will go above and beyond to make you feel absolutely fabulous in every way possible. After all, you are about to push a living breathing bundle of baby into your world soon. You certainly deserve it!

These photographs bring me such joy, and I hope you enjoy seeing them also. Keep an eye out for my next blog post to see my fun little bonus Milk Bath Maternity Photo Session with Sweet Pecks Photography!

Two years & changes…

Personal

Over two years…you guys, it has seriously been THAT long since I’ve blogged. I would be lying if I said it seemed like yesterday. After all the major changes that have taken place since then, it seems more like six years.

A little over two years ago, while living in Houston, we found out we were expecting our second baby girl. Jennifer Weems, a fellow photography friend back in Austin, brought my adventurous announcement vision to life for us. And though it came close to happening, no one fell in! It was a fun follow-up to our first “Baby on Board” announcement, documented by our dear friend, Robert Siciliano of Far North Photos, while living in Alaska (you can see those photos here).

But oh my, it has truly been one heck of an adventure! Due to difficulties during my first birth, my second pregnancy was high risk. My “upright” time was very limited. I spent the little time I had, caring for our one and a half year old in the mornings and evenings. Dad took her to and from school. During most days I laid at home. Transitioning back and forth, from the couch to the bed. Normally being a really active person, it was an incredibly difficult time for me.

Fairly early on in my pregnancy, my good friend and fellow photographer, Shary Peck of Sweet Pecks Photography, took my maternity photos. Because our first maternity session was in the mountains, I just HAD to have this session take place at the beach. Being the amazing person Shary is, she not only took my maternity photos, she also drove my reclined baby bump to Galveston, to make that happen for me! Seriously. Incredible.

I didn’t want to over complicate things, so I reluctantly decided to do photos without Dad and big sister-to-be. If you’ve ever participated in a photo session with a toddler, I’m confident you understand why. But knowing how important photos are to me, my husband and Scotty surprised me, showing up halfway thru the session. Right up there with finding out we expecting a healthy baby and my Baby Sprinkle, the following weekend, this afternoon was one of the top highlights of my pregnancy.

Fast forward 37 longggg weeks and we had ourselves an absolutely beautiful baby girl, named Brett. I’m not sure how we got so lucky, but this child was easy. I mean, unicorn baby, easy! She was perfect. After having a pretty difficult pregnancy and recovery, I really needed that in my life. Scotty was an awesome big sister. She LOVED her new sister, so hard. Haha. Luckily we never had any major new sibling jealousy. Though, we are still working on being “gentle.”

savvy images newborn photo

Our perfect, uncomplicated little way of life, didn’t last long. About six months after she was born, we decided to move to Northern California. My husband would be attending Wharton’s Executive MBA program in San Francisco every other weekend for two years AND simultaneously working and traveling full time for work. Yes. All the chaos. Please send me all the prayers, positivity and PATIENCE! We took the imperfectly/perfect photo below on our house hunting trip, with the trusty remote timer, to announce our move. You can see the girls were thrilled about it. Haha.

After packing up our lives in Houston and moving to Mountain View for a month, we finally found a new place to call home for a while, in Burlingame. While Dad is doing his work/school thing, you can find me and my girls adventuring all around the Bay Area. If the weather is nice and we have the chance, we usually head straight to the coast. Heaven on earth! It only takes us twenty five minutes to get to Half Moon Bay, where the photo below was taken. Again with the good ole’ remote timer. We can’t miss out on beautiful moments like this, because dad isn’t around to take photos. ;-) We may not be in California long, so we want to see and experience as much as possible while we are here!

While I haven’t formally reestablished Savvy Images here in the Bay Area yet, I have been working on a few great personal projects to keep me on my toes. Be sure to subscribe to my blog to see future posts to find out more about those. There are some seriously PRECIOUS images I’m dying to share with all of you soon!

An Intimate Maternity Session

Maternity

In July this cute family announced they were adding twins to their future travel plans. Now I’m thrilled to show off their intimate maternity photos! You can view their announcement photos > HERE < if you missed those. We originally had very different plans for their maternity session, but Mom was unexpectedly restricted to bed rest. As they should have, our plans quickly adapted. I assured her that we would STILL be able to get some beautiful images of her beautiful double baby belly. That is just what we did.

We captured their maternity photos in the cozy comfort of their very own home. It can’t get any more personal than that. I absolutely love how unique their photos are, and how they very literally, capture this very special time in their lives. It doesn’t hurt they have a cool eclectic decor, collected from their many travels around the world. Even some of the books in the Little One’s ever-growing library are from Mom and Dad’s travels since finding out they were expecting. One thing I love about their home is they have their family photos aesthetically displayed ALL over their home. As you can see from the photos below, they even have a large canvas from their announcement photos in the kiddos nursery! I love seeing my client’s photos proudly showcased, as they should be.

If you have a chance to check out this adventurous Momma’s travel blog, Always on Vacay, please do so now! –> www.alwaysonvacay.com <-- She has several posts with great maternity getaway ideas and suggestions. You can also find her on Instagram –> @alwaysonvacay_swang. Either way, I have no doubt she’ll also eventually have helpful blog posts about successfully traveling with her Little Loves!

Fall has arrived!!

Seniors

Fall in love with FALL… the time has finally arrived! I absolutely love cozy sweater weather and seeing everyone’s updated family photographs online! The first time I captured this young lady’s smile was during her family photo session back in Alaska two years ago. You can check those photos out > HERE < if you missed them. The fall colors don’t last long there, but my GOODNESS they are stunning.

Fast forward a few years, and I was blessed with the opportunity to capture this beautiful Miss again, here in Texas! The seasons aren’t as dramatic here, but that’s okay. What we captured during her mini session was on point. She’s a stunner and now she has a handful of great yearbook photo Ad options. Her full length photo session will take place this coming spring and I’m so excited about it! You better believe we are already brainstorming fun ideas. ;-)

Introducing Cora Quinn

Newborns

Before I even met her, I knew Cora Quinn was going to be a precious bundle of perfection. It was clear once I did, she is a little beauty, just like her Momma. Her gorgeous momma’s bluebonnet maternity photo session a few months earlier was just that… gorgeous. (Missed it? Click HERE) I had a sneaking suspicion her newborn photos session would go the same way. She was exactly two weeks young the day of her session. Just expected for her age, Cora was a very alert little gal. She wasn’t going for any birthday suit photos, but that was okay by us! She preferred to be all swaddled up, so we captured her cuteness just as she wished.

As you can see, this sweet girl has SUCH a cute nursery. I am glad we were able to incorporate her teepee and dresser into her photos. It will be cool to look back on these in several months to see how much she’s grow in such a short period of time! Because Grandma was there to help out, we snuck her into a few photos also. As a result, you can find my new favorite ‘generations’ photo below! Gorgeous, stunning, beautiful, precious. I could go on and on here. We also took cute family photos outside, as Mom and Dad spend lots of time there, living on the outskirts of town. And the must have image for the session… Daddy and Baby Cora on his John Deere tractor. Heart melting cuteness. I have NO doubt one day she’ll actually ride around on it with him in a few years.
