At twelve days old, this little missy was OH so pretty in pink. Because she was awake, we started her newborn photo session out by taking sweet photos with her mom. She was SO alert. She had very recently learned that she could stretch her skinny little legs and arms out, and she definitely loved doing so! I can’t deny that at that point, she made me a little nervous. There is a pretty slim window in a newbie’s fresh little life to capture (what I consider to be) true, cute little posed, ‘newborn photos’. At two weeks old, she was quickly nearing the end of that window. Next we captured some major cuteness of her cuddled up in a Seal skin hat that her grandmother hand made especially for her dad, to keep him warm during the harsh Alaska winters. Of course mom had the fireplace going so it was nice and cozy for her session, and that was incredibly helpful. With a little patience and persistence, she finally conked out for all of her ‘posed’ individual photos. And ohhhh myyyy, they ended up being SO precious. What a precious little lady! Her mom ordering a huge canvas of her with the pink wrap gently draped over her, and I believe that I just may have to get one to display in the studio also. Pretty in pink, in deed.

Introducing a Fall Bundle of Joy • Alaska Newborn Photos
NewbornsThis handsome bundle of joy was born smack dab in the middle of fall here in Alaska. His name is Micah Julyan, and his momma wanted the timing of his birth to be captured in his newborn photos. SO that’s exactly what we did. Because we did his session as fall turned to winter, it was too cold to take this cute little man outside. So we improvised and brought some fun fall outdoor details into the Savvy Images studio! She gathered leaves from around their neighborhood and a few other festive fall items, and I absolutely love how it turned out. They clearly have much more colorful trees near where they live, because the ones I gathered were only a dull tone of orange and brown…lol. In his family photos, he looks JUST like a tiny little MAN!! I cannot even HANDLE the cuteness of his big one eye grin! This happy little one was checking on exactly what we were up to. Micah loved being bundled up and snuggling into his bunny “Rags” (which is also his grandpa Julyan’s nickname). We finished his session with some cute bare booty shots, and his skinny little roles were beyond precious! By the time they came back to review their photos a couple weeks later, he had already grown SO much. I absolutely LOVE seeing how much my cute little Savvy Newbies grow and change over time. Just think how much will have changed when mom and dad look back on his tiny toes in these photos ten years from now!

Timing for Perfect Newborn Photos
NewbornsBack in March I posted a blog on “Tips and Timing for Perfect Maternity Photos“, and this blog about newborn photos is WELL over due! If you are expecting, and would like to have newborn photos taken, PLEASE take a moment to read this blog post. And even more so, please keep in mind that the timing of your photo session is extremely important. It breaks my heart when mothers contact me well after their little one’s birth, specifically wanting cute/bendy/posed newborn photos. I can take beautiful lifestyle photos of you and your baby regardless of the timing, but in order to take THOSE types of “posed” photos, they should be taken WITHIN two weeks of birth. This is not a hard and fast rule, as each birth and baby is very unique, but knowing this information give you the power to plan accordingly as you wish. It can certainly be done later, but it just may potentially be a little more challenging for us. I certainly have the patience to do everything I can in my power to make it happen! Many of my little Savvy Newbies sessions have taken place well after two weeks, and I’ve never been disappointed with a single one of them. Some of them were born really early, so we waited until they were good and healthy for their “modeling debut”. The other newbies parents just didn’t realize the timing of newborn photos was so crucial. Luckily their mom’s wanted photos regardless, so we proceeded accordingly, and captured some MAJOR cuteness. What normal person WOULD just happen know that random information!? They TYPE of newborn photos you wish to capture will largely determine the best timing, and THAT is the purpose of this handy blog post. ;-) I want to make sure you can make an informed decision that sets us up to capture stunning images!
When brand new babies are just getting to know the world around them, it’s amazing what changes a SINGLE day can bring. Each day baby grows, becomes more alert, and learns they can stretchhhh those little arms and legs out on their own free will. Once that happens, keeping them cozy in those little “bendy” poses can be a tad bit challenging. I personally prefer to photograph newborn girls around 5 to 7 days old, and the timing of the little boys may vary by a few days later. Their timing greatly depends on if/when they are circumcised. A minor detail that we definitely want to take that into consideration! Taking their photos then really allows us to capture all their brand NEW little details. It also gives their complexion a little time to even out, and allows for Little Bit to get used to mom’s milk. A happy settled tummy does help set us up for success also!
Speaking of success, I provide you with LOTS of great information on what you can do to help make sure your session goes well. In addition to more information on timing, there will also be info on what to wear, what to bring, how to prepare, and even great tips on nursing. That seems to be helpful for all my first time mommas! Once you pay your Newborn Session retainer fee, your due date is officially penciled in on our calendar. Then when your baby finally arrives, you (OR preferably dad) can contact me to get your actual session day/time scheduled. As an official “Savvy Newbie”, you get priority on our schedule. Contact us as soon as possible, and we’ll get that worked out perfectly! We realize the world as you know it may be filled with crazy chaos at this time with all the new changes taking place, but we will do everything we can to make your session as quick and painless as possible. ;-) AND of course we’ll make sure that you have lots of gorgeous newborn photos to cherish for years to come!
Are you expecting a precious new little bundle soon?! Contact Savvy Images about getting your due date on our calendar now!
Introducing Owen Michael • Anchorage Newborn Photos
NewbornsOwen is the newest Savvy Newbie in Anchorage, and I’m VERY excited to show him off. He and all of his cuteness are on the cover of the August issue of First Time Parent Magazine! FTP Magazine is a fairly new digital magazine that offers tips and tricks that will help first time parents maximize the enjoyment and development of their precious little ones. I can only imagine how helpful a handy electronic magazine like that would be, after bringing home a brand new baby for the first time. And it just so happens, that is just what Owen’s parents are… first time parents here in Anchorage!

Introducing Ava Sue • Anchorage Newborn Photos
NewbornsLittle Miss Ava Sue… where do I start!? How about with her big brother and sister! We started her newborn session out with the primary goal of capturing an amazing sibling shot of these three together. Most of you can imagine how difficult that may be to get three little ones to sit still for more than five seconds, and simultaneously photograph them?! Big brother was strategically persuaded into wearing a white shirt, being bare footed outside, and carefully holding his new tiny sister. And even though big sister wasn’t really sure what to think about someone else getting all the baby attention, it was clear that they both simple adore her. The session started out with a bang, and we managed to capture some MAJOR cuteness for the .5 seconds that they sat still and paid attention to us or their sister. We even managed to get a quick double head kiss!! SUCCESS..lol..!! Now about the rest of the session… Little Ava made us work for those beautiful photos! I mean serious, what is happening, please cooperate, I NEED beautiful photos WORK. You could never tell in the photos below that she was such a strong willed and alert little angel. But that’s okay! Patience was definitely key during her session, and I am SO glad to say that it definitely paid off!! Mom was a trooper, and we are both beyond please and excited about her photos. I know both her and dad with cherish these photos when those three little angels are running circles around them. It will happen, and I hope I’m there to take beautiful photos of them doing so one day!
I’ve been blessed to photograph this family for several years now! If you would like to see some of their other beautiful photos, you can check those out here!
Introducing Katherine Ann • Anchorage Newborn Photos
NewbornsThis beautiful petite little lady was just as angelic as could be, but don’t be fooled… Katherine may be tiny, but she is a VERY determined TINY little lady. She made us work really hard for the precious photos we got. After reviewing her gallery with her mom yesterday, we quickly decided that it was absolutely worth all the work! She was full of sassy little expressions, and seriously… just look at her precious little lips!! Thank goodness she has a protective big brother to keep a good eye out on her as she grows up. When she cried during her session, Thomas was so concerned about her. He just HAD to make sure she was okay! It was really cute, and I LOVE to see such a caring quality in siblings. He was a little shy, but SO eager to take photos with her. At five days young Katherine was incredibly alert during her session. We even managed to capture her big beautiful eyes. I cannot wait to photograph these two again, so I can see how they grow into their cute little personalities. I have no doubt it will be an overload of cuteness!!
Double Love • Twins Newborn Photos
NewbornsWhen this beautiful momma-to-be of TWINS contacted me about her maternity photos, my honey and I were about to take off to The Dominican Republic to get married! Timing was tight, but I just HAD to make her session happen for her before we left. Amidst each of our chaos, we managed to get her and her proud daddy-to-be into the Savvy Images studio one snowy evening! It was a freezing downpour outside, but I was so excited to take photos for them. I just love the fact that she loves teal, AND sports it very nicely. We quickly established that we would also use teal in their twins newborn session once Austin and Alan arrived! It makes me extremely happy when a maternity and newborn session compliment each other so well. Once the cuties made their grand debut, we got their session scheduled, and I’m not going to lie… I was actually a tad bit nervous! Not because they were twins, but because their momma warned me multiple times that her precious little Alana was going to be a major handful for us! I must say that I ALWAYS expect a challenge during my newborn sessions, but rarely does a mother ever warn me to expect one! Haha. Her nosey little angel did run the show that evening, but she ultimately did great for us! I was BEYOND ecstatic to get adorable, cuddly photos of her and her brother together when they were all cute and tiny! I say that because, when we met again for their Viewing Session, it was astonishing how much each of them had grown in such a short period of time!! I just love to see my little Savvy newbies growing up all healthy and strong! It will be priceless for all of them to look back on their newborn photos in twenty-something years to see Austin become a handsome young man that’s almost twice the size of Miss Alana. At least mom and dad will know that she’ll be well looked after! ;-)
Identical Twins!! • Anchorage Newborn Photos
NewbornsI was beyond excited when the mother of these precious little Identical Twins contacted me to take their newborn photos shortly after they were born! A fun little side note, is that their mom is ALSO an identical twin. What are the chances of that?! It was extremely cool to capture their matching little cuteness while they were still teeny tiny! I would like to introduce Ashley Sloan and Sophia Michele!! It was great to have all their cute little newborn perfection in the Savvy Images Studio!! Little Miss Ashley was very alert during their session and kept us on our toes. She knew there was a party going on (aka their first modeling job), and she wanted to know just WHAT was taking place! Haha. She did great when she was near her sister Sophia though. It was so sweet to see her relax once she got cozy next to her sister. That is clearly where she belongs, and we should have KNOWN better. Cutie Sophia was all smiles, and just as laid back as she could be! Having natural, beautiful, black & white photos of her angels was important to mom, so of course we had to make that happen. The love and connection between twins is such an amazing thing to witness, and it’s even more amazing to capture that in their newborn photos. It is an absolute treat to watch my Savvy Newbie’s personalities develop over time! I already look forward to photographing these two again once they get a little older. With their mother’s fantastic genes, there is NO doubt that they will definitely be beautiful young ladies!! I’m super excited.. Mom doesn’t realize (just yet) that she’s getting a custom SavvyApp with her precious cuties newborn photos to share with her family and friends!! They will all be able to save it to their smart phones, and show them off anytime (with or withOUT an internet connection). How cool is that!? I just love spoiling my clients! ;-)
Compliments from Savvy Moms • Houston Newborn Photographer
NewbornsThings have been a bit quiet on the blog this past week because I was in Las Vegas for almost an entire week soaking up lots of amazing information at a HUGE photography convention. My ultimate goal was to come back to Alaska with the knowledge to improve the overall Savvy Images experience from start to finish! Spoiler Alert… I’ll talk about that a lot more on the Travel Tuesday Blog this coming week. (wink, wink) Being fairly new to Anchorage, I think it’s VERY important for my potential Savvy Moms to know what to expect of their experience with Savvy Images! What you should know is that I LOVE photographing precious little newborn babies! But what I know, is that it can be a bit scary entrusting someone you know very little about to capture precious memories of your brand new little bundle of joy. Newborn photos are key to capturing those perfect little details, and it’s definitely an investment that you don’t want to question. Even though there are currently lots of very exciting improvements in the works, I wanted to share what some of our existing Moms have to say about their experience with Savvy Images! All you have to do is visit the “Compliments” page on the Savvy Images Website
Most first time mothers don’t realize that a newborn photography session can be a lot of work, but my goal is to see that their session is a smooth sailing success! That is also why I make sure that my moms are properly prepared before hand by providing lots of great information in an electronic “Newborn Welcome Package”. Knowledge is half the battle, and patience is key (don’t worry, I have plenty of that)…haha. It is extremely important to me that each session is as meaningful as possible! This is why I LOVE to brainstorm with my moms about how to make their newborn session completely unique TO THEM. Here are some specific examples of our successful brainstorming: incorporating their little one’s nursery theme into the session, including their fur baby/sibling in the session, having their bundle wear cute outfits that their MOM knitted, or even using dad’s old baseball glove as a photo prop. Not only do I incorporating meaningful personal items in the session if possible, but I also have LOTS of beautiful newborn wraps, hats, headbands and props to use during each session. I love coordinating beautiful colors to compliment, and add the perfect touch to your beautiful photographs. If you are currently expecting, and would like to explore your newborn photo options, please contact Savvy Images, so we can chat more about your perfect and unique newborn session!!
Introducing Callum Wylie • Anchorage Newborn Photos
NewbornsThis little guy is growing up fast, but I’m still excited about officially introducing him and his awesome family!! Seriously, they are SO much fun, and I’m blessed to have such awesome clients! His mom came to me with a fun “before and after baby” idea she’d seen online. Not only do I think we nailed it, but we all had SO much fun actually taking the photos. That is a HUGE plus in my opinion! We took the first silly family photo during their maternity session, and then after Callum made his grand entrance into the world, we took the second photo at the beginning of his newborn session. I LOVE that they wanted to include the entire family in some fun photos! This handsome little guy was a dream to photograph. He was alert during the first part of his newborn session, but posed perfectly for my camera…I think mom and dad may have a little model on their hands?! All his little baby details were beyond precious, and I don’t believe he even cried ONCE.. Just amazing! That certainly happens, but not very often at all. Because we did the session in their home, we were even able to carefully pose him (with mom very close by), in a cool piece of artwork. I always love using personal items in newborn sessions when possible, to add an incredibly personal touch. In twenty years he will be able to look back at these photos, see that piece of artwork in his parent’s living room, and then realize just how small his cutie booty actually was!
Introducing Kasen Campbell • Anchorage Newborn Photos
NewbornsThere has been a lot of catching up, as well as exciting plans in the works over here at Savvy Images!! You may remember cute little Kasen’s sneak peek from last spring. This little guy was born three weeks early weighing in at a whopping 4 pounds and 10 ounces, and spent lots of time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). I can say one thing with certainty… this handsome mini man is a fighter! Though he was a bit gassy during his newborn session, he continues to make his parents very proud. Haha, it could have been worse. He put us to work, but we definitely captured some pretty precious photos for mom and dad. Including their first family photo with his fur-brother Presley! I can’t wait until he grows up to see how little his butt once was in his daddy’s baseball glove!! And I bet one day he’ll also play many great rounds of golf with his grandpa’s golf club. There is no doubt that dad will make sure Kasen is a great little sportsman!
Anderson Family Review • Houston Family Photographer
Babies, Families, Kids, Maternity, NewbornsThis blog post is a compilation of photos that I have taken of the Anderson Family over the last year and a half, beginning with wonderful news of Baby #2 during an Announcement Mini Session!! You have probably seen some of these photos on past blogs or sneak peeks, but I thought it was really important to actually show their journey collectively. I am very fortunate because this hot momma happens to be one of my very best friends. Not only does she have a beautiful growing family that is a blast to photograph, but she also truly cherishes having beautiful photos. WIN-WIN. I’m incredibly grateful that she has helped to support the growth of Savvy Images over the last several years (another major WIN)! She and her husband are small business owners themselves, so they fully understand the struggles involved with growing and maintaining a reputable company these days.
In the recent past I’ve gotten questions from aspiring/amateur photographers about taking photos for family and friends. I figured out fast that could be VERY tricky! I would absolutely LOVE to take beautiful photos of all of my loved ones at no charge, but if I did, I would quickly go broke! When I established Savvy Images, I decided that I would have a set rate (and expectations) for my family and and any close friends that wanted me to take photos for them. It prevented any potential miscommunications, and set our photo experience up for success! It’s safe to say that anyone would like great photos for free, but I felt that if they truly valued my hard work and photography, that they would be willing to pay a fair price for it. It helps to ensure that I never feel like I’m being taken advantage of (not they ever would intentionally do so), and no wheeling & dealing is ever necessary to cause any potential awkwardness between us. After all, photography IS my career. My clients reactions to their photographs is INcredibly rewarding to me, but unfortunately my bills are not going to pay themselves! Dang it..Haha! I honestly feel that one of the reasons that Savvy Images has been so successful is because my family and friends were completely on board with my thinking on this, and continued to support my vision and hard work over the past several years. What can I say… they truly are AWESOME!!
